About

Clarence “Skip” Measelle is a career artist based in Palm Beach County, Florida for over 30 years. The varied interests of his practice have produced a substantial body of work in several phases with multiple points of recognition. He originally came to prominence as a “photorealist” painter, has been exhibited in major metropolitan markets throughout the United States and was honored with his first solo exhibition at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach in 1975.

Measelle works with traditional and contemporary painting mediums along with a variety of recycled everyday objects and refuse chosen for their distinctive mark-making possibilities. He is continually experimenting with a variety of 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, and illusionistic combinations, and often employs an airbrush.

Each of his paintings is an event that has its own life not necessarily dependent on the last work created. Each painting has its own voice which in turn speaks to the individual viewer to whom it reaches. His paintings reflect a process of change and flux, with risk-taking and chance left to determine the outcome… a celebration of the aesthetic of uncertainty. Each painting with its explicit and implicit layers is “a stitch in time” of endless discovery.

Measelle has recently been immersed in an exploration of abstract compositions which also contain multiple instances of suggested representational imagery, appearing spontaneously from random brush strokes and transfers. In this series painted on industrial heavyweight tarps he calls these explorations “ghost tarps” because of the mysterious images that appear spontaneously during his process.

Measelle’s paintings have been exhibited in over 100 gallery and museum exhibitions throughout the United States, England, Holland, and Switzerland. His work is collected nationally and globally.
